03 Seymore Visits Fort Pickens

Today the Little Girl and Seymore were playing Fort. The little Girl had built a fort in the dining room and they called it Fort Adventure.   They were having fun coloring and reading.  Seymore started thinking.  He remembered seeing a sign for Fort Pickens while they were at the beach.  He wondered if it was like Fort Adventure and whether or not he and the Little Girl could play there too?  So the Little Girl decided they should visit Fort Pickens.

Fort Pickens was in the Gulf Islands National Park way past the beach Seymore had been to with the Little Girl.  Shore birds made their nests on the ground along the way to the fort.  They had to go slow so it would be safe for the baby birds to cross the roads.
It took a little longer than Seymore expected, but they finally made it to the fort! Fort Pickens was nothing like the fort in the dining room.  It was huge! And it looked very different than any of the buildings Seymore had seen before.  The little girl said it was a very old place.  In fact, Fort Pickens was over 180 years old and that made it a very historic place.  You can learn a lot about the past at historic places.

There was a welcome center at the entrance.  They offered guided tours or printed tour guides.  The Little Girl grabbed a printed guide and they went to explore.

They saw the white rooms where Officers lived – those were the guys in charge.

Then they went into a hallway with a canon.  The canon was the coolest thing Seymore had ever seen!  They could see a large semi-circle on the floor where the canon was placed, and the tools used to make it work.

Next they found a long dark tunnels.  It was a little creepy, but fun to explore and it was a nice place to cool down.  The tunnels were used as a self-destruct system in case enemies ever took over the fort – but that never happened.

Outside the fort, Seymore saw a huge gap in the wall.  This was from an explosion in a gunpowder room!

Seymore also noticed all the arches in the fort. The arches also went under the ground.  That is because arches were the best way to build a fort in the sand.

Best of all, Seymore saw more canons!  There was a canon in the middle of the fort, or the Parade Grounds.  And more canons on top of the fort.

Seymore and the Little Girl got to play in an area that looked like a jail.  This was actually called Battery Pensacola and was an extra part built onto the fort to add more canons.

Seymore Goes to the Tree Farm

12/5/2016

A few days ago the Little Girl changed her calendar to December.  So much had happened since then!  The Little Girl’s mom had redecorated the living room.  The Little Girl’s dad had put colorful lights all over the outside of the house.  And now they were all taking a car ride out to a farm.  The Little Girl told Seymore that this farm was special because they grew Christmas trees!

First they found the sign for the farm.

Then they went down a long dirt road before they finally pulled up to the gate.

And there they were…rows and rows of Christmas trees.

There were tall trees…

And helpers at the farm wrapped up the tree, put on a tree stand, and loaded it into the car.  Now the car smelled wonderful!

The little Girl had time to play while they helped her dad.  The farm even had snow!

The Day I Shaved a Cat

7/8/2016

Rescue Cat
I did something last week that I have never done before – I shaved a cat.  Overall, it was not the horrifying experience that I was expecting.

A friend of a friend in Pensacola rescued some cats.  One was a pregnant tabby and one was an extremely matted long haired cat – aptly named “Esma”.  Poor Esma could barely sit or move.  And she could not tolerate being touched.
It took the better part of 3 hours, but we were able to remove all the mats.  I am no professional, but Esma seemed very grateful to be free – can’t you see the joy in her face?

While we were working on the mats, the tabby went into labor and had a healthy little litter of kittens.
I went by to check up on them (and of course snap some pictures. I love pet photography.) Esma was moving with ease and starting to enjoy some cuddle time – look at her smile!

And momma cat even let me snap a few
quick photos of her adorable kittens. (She approves of cat portraits, but not dog photography!)

02 Seymore Goes to the Beach

Seymore was finally home with his little girl. Seymore’s new home was in a town called Pace just outside of Pensacola, Florida. The first place the Little Girl wanted to show Seymore was Pensacola Beach. As they rode out to the beach, the Little Girl read Seymore a book about Florida. Seymore learned that the state of Florida is a peninsula (Pen-In-Sue-La). A peninsula is a piece of land that is almost surrounded by water.  Florida has about 1,350 miles of coastline. That is a whole lot of beaches!

Pensacola Beach was famous for being part of the Emerald Coast. The beach had beautiful blue/green water and soft, fine, white sand.

The first thing Seymore saw as they arrived was a giant beach ball.  It was huge!  The Little Girl said that it was a water tower that held fresh water.  Seymore imagined what fun it would be to play with that huge beach ball.

Seymore was very excited as they walked out to the beach.  He could hear the waves.  He could feel the sea breeze.  And he could smell the ocean.

The little girl had packed a “beach bag” that had everything they would need for the day: sunblock, towels, snacks, water, and beach toys.

Seymore and The Little Girl looked for seashells by the water.

And they played in the sand.

They saw seagulls and crabs on the sand and little fish in the waves.

They ran from the waves as they came to shore…

What a great day!  Seymore hoped they could come back to the beach soon.
